City

Shashnani'i cities are in some ways idyllic compared to human cities: they are less distinguishable from plant-covered cliffsides than a skyline we'd expect.  Spires reach up, their sun facing sides covered in plants, vines and terraces, their dark sides with ventilation holes and elevators.  These are the cities' gills, they use natural air currents to suck fresh air into the streets and buildings through great arterioles in the spires.  The spires also maxmize surface area to the sun, used by permaculture gardens that help to feed the city.  Cities are engineered to work as a whole, supporting other buildings with great arches that are built themselves. No neighbourhood stands alone.

But, it is not all perfection, for there is literally a dark underbelly. (Sewage never makes it there, being shunted into algae/shrimp/fish wetlands, in which part must always be fed in upstream).  The underground is used for maintenance tunnels, geothermal heating pipes, steam engine complexes, archives and other things that must be locked away. Creatures and ill deeds not welcome have plenty of shadows to hide here.

Sixty percent of the Shashnimyn population now resides in Cities.  Proportionally, adventuring myn are more common outside of cities.  The larger cities are veritable machines of efficiency and vibrancy.  They are often arcologies and cycle their waste back into useful purposes, as well as producing a fair quantity of their own food.  The centralization of city resources allows them to excel at mass production of common goods and to offer services to surrounding areas to make up for the raw materials and additional food they require.

Great public transit, industry at the bottom, heat exchangers moving through the city.  Most of them take the form of giant mounds with many glass pillars sticking out of them, taking advantage of both a stable structure low area-volume base, with towers that have a high surface area for stacked greenhouse ecosystems.  The trend for cities to be built around water sources is just as prevalent on Shashnia, though rivers and falls are rarely covered over by a city's megastructure so as not to hinder the natural processes.  In some highly industrialized cities, the rivers are diverted into two: one that transports the organic beings through a tube system out to a resevoir(dam) driven stream right out of the city, while the rest is used to generate power, steam and sustain the city.

The largest cities are governed by an Elder council as usual, but it is notable that the size of the city is generally correlated with the age of the Eldest, capital cities approaching ages of 1000 years.

Two types of cities emotionally

  • cold cities
    • citizens ignore all but a few friends so that they are not overwhelmed.
  • warm cities
    • every individual smiles and nods a sincere welcome to each other. their days interact positively.

some stuffy myn prefer the cold cities because they complain with everyone walking around smiling and acknowledging each other, it's hard to get anything done.

in some larger cities, there is a canal layer where the leylines have been condensed/augmented to a level where part of their energy gives off friction and creates a smooth surface upon which things glide.
