Plants are the reason for such abundance of life.  They are the lungs of the planet, that cycles the air, water, and nutrients.  Millions of years ago, there was only inert gases in the atmosphere.  Algae formed near the surface of tidal pools and began to turn light into energy.  In turn they breathed out.  After the oxygen was captured by metals, it began to fill the skies.
