Character Creation Interview

Page history last edited by 1nfinite zer0 10 years, 6 months ago

Take a piece of paper and start writing your answers to the following questions:

(or create a new page in another tab, copy the section at the bottom, and fill it in as you go)

Basics

What age is your character?

  • Youth, 15-25yrs, age of apprenticeship, good for starting characters
  • Adult, 30-60 yrs
  • Elder, 60-200 yrs

Where are you from?

  • Mountains - caves, castles and crystals
  • Jungle - tree towns and hidden villages
  • Desert - nomads and canyon cities
  • Sky - cloud farmers and pirates

Are you a citizen?

  • Yes = free stuff! skills, abilities, education, and access to borrow resources or be fed/lodged in towns. Also comes with responsibilities of work and social/political involvement.
  • No - you are a brigand, living in camps or settlements outside the political systems, semi-anarchic units, often criminal and competitive.

Attributes

The three most important statistics that describe your character is the balance of their body, mind and soul. Write those three words on your paper, and then decide one of the options in the list below to describe them.  (See the image for an example of how to write them)

A character who is more focused on their body is like an athlete, they work with their strength through farming, running, digging, climbing, etc. Some examples include sailors (sea & sky), monks, engineers, etc.

A character who is more focused on mind, is one that is concerned with thinking. Professions like scientists, inventors, alchemists, mages, etc.

A character who is more focused on their soul attribute is one that is spiritually endowed and intuitive; people like shamans, healers, fortune tellers, counselors, elected community members, etc

(For more information on any of the attributes in this section, please go back to the Character Design page)

  1. Typical - choose one attribute you've focused on and write "Good" next to it, next to the rest write "Fair".
  2. Specialized - choose one attribute you've spent so much time specializing on that you are weak in another, write "Superb" next to to it, then choose the attribute (BMS) that you neglected, write "Mediocre" next to it (which is really just the untrained starting level), and write "Fair next to the one that is left.
  3. Balanced - Next to all attributes, write "Fair" and make note that you will get an extra 2 SAPTIS (skill) points in a moment.

Body/Mind/Soul are also called primary attributes, within each there are three secondary attributes.  Write down these attributes alongside the primary attributes. Look through the list of these and choose two that you want to improve and write +1 next to them. Or, if you see one or two that you are less good at, write -1 next to them and spend an additional point elsewhere. Use any combination of plus or minuses as long as they equal positive 2, and nothing is greater than +/-2.

The last set of attributes to describe your character are the skill attributes. These are what your character has trained in, rather than what they are inherently good/weak at.  Write all six down. You have 3 points to allocate here, and you can also reduce some to get more points. If you are a citizen, everything starts at Fair, which is level 1. Otherwise everything starts at Mediocre, which is level 0, the default untrained.

They are the 6 disciplines taught in their schools, and permeate throughout their systems of knowledge:

  • Social – abilities pertaining to interaction and communication with other myn
  • Animal – abilities which adopt or adapt to those of non-shashnimyn beings
  • Physical – abilities of body mastery
  • Technical – abilities focused on tools; their creation, maintenance or use
  • Intellectual – abilities of the mind and thinking
  • Spiritual – abilities of spirit, the soul and communication with other spirit entities

Abilities

What does your character spend their time doing?  Typically they are employed somehow, or being an apprentice at some task if they are a youth.  Here is a list of possible jobs, but you can think of anything you want to:

Farmer

Monk

Carpenter

Blacksmith

Merchant

Alchemist

Herbalist

Actor

Stage Illusionist

Priest

Warrior

Librarian

Choose one from the list, or make up your own.  Write it on the paper, as well as a sentence describing  what you like about that job, or why you are doing it.

Choose one type of training from the following combat list:

Unarmed combat - fists and martial arts

Armed combat - basic weapons combat

Defensive combat - aikido, or how to turn a hand to hand attack into a defense

Shield - deflect or slow arrows and simple ranged weapons

You may choose one magic category from the list (Magic Mechanics) that fits in your character idea.

If you can think of a time in the past where they used this ability, great, write it down and it will help to describe your character.

If you don't to look at the list and already have an idea, that's fantastic, write about it so a mod can help you turn it into spells.  Note, that because of the religion on Shashnia, fire is associated with evil and demons. But there is non-evil and still warm magic fire which is blue.

Descriptive questions

Answer the following questions in point form or sentences, but feel free to add as much detail or other writing as you want.

What does your character look like? Is there anything that people first notice?

Where are you now?

If you aren't in the area you were born in, what brought you here?

What is something that happened in the past which shaped them to be what they are now?

What are they trying to accomplish? Set a goal that they are working towards.

All done the interview?

Start a new page and write down the answers to your questions, as well as any additional stories you want to tell about your character's background.  The more you write, the more abilities you can have to start.  You have to create an account to start a page, but they are free and just need an email address.

Copy the section below this line to fill out your character sheet on a new wiki page
